Endodontics Treatment

Endodontics Treatment

Endodontics

Endodontic treatment is one of the most common procedures. When the dental pulp [containing nerves, vessels, arterioles, lymphatic tissues and fibrous tissues] gets deceased or injured due to caries in the tooth, endodontic treatment is required.

RCT/ RE-RCT [ROOT CANAL TREATMENT]

A tooth contains 3 layers. First one and the most outermost is the tooth enamel then the second layer is the dentin and then comes the third, which is pulp. Whenever there is caries in a tooth involving pulp then we go for RCT.

The common symptoms seen are the pain and the swelling around the tooth involved, that’s when a patient comes to a dentist for the treatment. RCT is also done to prevent adverse signs

and symptoms and promote the healing and repair of the surrounding peri-radicular tissues.

Prior to root canal treatment [RCT], clinical examination and radiographic examination are

carried out to diagnose and plan treatment. Local anesthesia is delivered to make the procedure

painless. It is often carried out in single or multiple sittings.

What is root canal treatment? What does a dentist do in RCT?

The answer to this question is when there is caries in a tooth involving the pulp then there is requirement of RCT. In this the dentist\ endodontist cleans the canals within the tooth [that contains the infected pulp I.e vital tissue] with the help of the instruments. The dentist shapes the inside of the root canals and then fills it with an inert material upto the root canal length. It may require intra-canal medicament if the teeth and the surrounding tissue contains pus which

means it will require more sittings than the usual.

What is Re-RCT?

Re-RCT is the procedure which is required if your RCT treated tooth gets re-infected or was not properly filled earlier. In such cases, the already filled material is taken out and the root canals are again cleaned and shaped properly. And then filled again.

Is it necessary to get a crown after RCT?

It is always advised to get a crown done after RCT as it provides more strength to the tooth. RCT treated tooth gets brittle with time and there are more chances of it to get fractured. So to avoid fracture of the tooth, it is always advisable to get the crown done so that the tooth can bear all the masticatory forces.

Is RCT a painful procedure?

RCT is done under local anaesthesia to avoid pain during the procedure. Still sometimes it may cause a little pain while doing it as not all teeth respond to the local anaesthesia, in the same manner. If your tooth is already paining [hot tooth], there are slight chances of pain while doing it. So it is always advisable to get your regular checkup done so that you can avoid such conditions of hot tooth.
